Expand your horizons. It’s easy to do at Park Place of Elmhurst. With our partnership with Timothy Christian Schools, there’s a variety of opportunities for new experiences and new friendships.

Partnering With Timothy Christian Schools

Just across the parking lot is our good neighbor, Timothy Christian Schools. In fact, when planning Park Place, we chose the site – at greater cost than alternative locations – largely because of its proximity (next door) to a K-12 school.

Why?

Because we had big plans for developing a robust intergenerational program that would benefit residents and students alike.

Intergenerational Services

We developed our intergenerational program to maximize its purpose and possibilities; to encompass much more than a single event or activity.

At Park Place, intergenerational interaction is a priority, dwelling at the heart of our vision for the quality of life we help residents achieve.

Working closely with the school, we created a program with a variety of activities developed to have a meaningful, lasting and positive impact on residents, the school’s students and the greater community.

A Program That Benefits Everyone

Resident Benefits

We create energizing opportunities for residents to teach and mentor, enjoy shared learning and experiences, and see wonder and respect in youthful eyes. The result? Residents feel an elevated sense of worth and relevance, gain a better understanding of younger people’s perspectives, and inspire faith that the future is in good hands.

Student Benefits

Student participants range in age from kindergarten to high school seniors. Our program fosters the development of a life-changing view of elders. Students see them as accomplished people with a wealth of knowledge gained through long, interesting lives and careers – a wealth of knowledge they are eager to share. This is an exciting opportunity for students to build new relationships and learn through stories of personal, lived experiences.

Community Benefits

We are building a brighter future by helping to develop the next generation who will address the world’s challenges. We believe the students will expand the impact of their experiences like a pebble in a pond, from their hometown to across our nation to the global community, contributing to a better society for all.

Recent Program Highlights

From delivering real-world experience and advice to sharing the beauty of creativity, Park Place residents and
Timothy Christian Schools students have been busy!

VEI Program

In the high school business class, students participate in Virtual Enterprises International (VEI). The students create, run and apply for C-level jobs in a virtual company. A Business Advisory Board made up of residents, many of whom are retired executives, conducts the interviews.

Advisors meet with the candidates and then provide feedback forms to the teachers/program leader. The students create a business plan and present it to the Advisory Board for a critique. The Board provides added support through ongoing feedback and advice.

The students continue to come back throughout the year for advice and perspective. This one-on-one interaction with residents who have lived experience in the corporate world provides students with knowledge that cannot be provided in a regular classroom.

Musical Programs

Music fills the air throughout the year at Park Place, thanks to students of every age and talent. From the Middle School Violin & Guitar Players performing classical pieces and hymns to to the Junior Chamber Choir lifting their voices in song during a Christmas concert and then caroling through the courtyard, residents enjoy a variety of musical styles and performances. Other recent performances featured orchestral music, including a viola performance, a cello concert, and the choirs and chamber singers.

4th Grade Book Discussions

Students from the 4th Grade Advanced Reading Group came to Park Place to discuss the novel “My Daniel” with residents who had read the book beforehand. Students and residents paired up and sat at tables in groups of four to share their thoughts and interpretations. Residents guided the conversations using a list of critical thinking questions distributed ahead of time.

Testimonials

“When members of a community get together to share thoughts, the community becomes stronger and closer. Getting to know these kids gives us confidence that the future is in good hands.” —Resident

“There’s a person there who has always supported me and helped me achieve my goals, especially in my transition from high school to college. She has become an extremely important person in my life. I will forever be grateful to the intergenerational program for introducing us.”—Student
